Snæfellsjökull - Hellnar

Snæfellsjökull

The path leading to the Snæfellsjökull glacier crosses this landscape where only moss has managed to find a place.

Mount Stapafell

In early June, the snow reaches low at the foot of the volcano and it's impossible for us to go any further by car.
And there's no one to take us on these snowmobiles, so never mind, we'll walk a little way!

The summit of Snæfellsjökull volcano.

Snæfellsjökull is a stratovolcano (hence the conical shape of the mountain formed by successive lava flows). Its last eruption was about 1700 years ago. That leaves us plenty of time...

This cloud doesn't seem to scare the group of hikers climbing towards the summit of the volcano...

Hellnar

A little further along the coast, we make a short stop in Hellnar. We see beautiful "basaltic organs", typical "tube" formations of basaltic lava.
