El Remate

First "real" meal after our 5-day El Mirador trek...

El Remate

And we dreamed of it while walking between muddy paths and mosquitoes... a Swimming Pool!

In El Remate, there's not much to do except walk around. This small town is mainly one of the closest points to Tikal, the great Mayan archaeological site, a must-see in the country. But for today, the day will be quiet, especially with a short walk in the Cerro Cahui biotope.

We had sailed on it in Flores, a week ago at its western end. We are now at its eastern end. Here is the immense Lake Petén Itzá.

The Monte Hermon church is in full service. The Catholic religion has given way over the decades to evangelicals. The latter now represent 80% of the country's religions, whereas they were only 5% a few decades ago...

A "jocón" to end the day. This stew with green sauce and meat is one of Guatemala's specialties.
