San Juan del Sur

El Estional

Once settled in San Juan del Sur, and with a full stomach, we begin exploring the coast heading South. Here we are at El Estional, a small town overlooking a large beach. Alas, the weather is not on our side. We won't be tempted by a little swim...

El Ostional - San Juan Del Sur

We are like the black vultures: contemplative in front of a lonely beach and its Pacific Ocean.

Ha. Even he remains unmoved.

Here are two writers sitting on their bench, preferring discussion to simple contemplation of the sea... This sculpture pays homage to Mark Twain ("Tom Sawyer" for his most famous novel) and Rubén Darío ("modernist" movement of Latin America), two emblematic figures of the American continent. Mark Twain landed in San Juan del Sur in December 1866, while Rubén Darío was born a few weeks later, 200 kilometers further north.

And on the other side, someone watches over us, just like on the Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. It is Christ the Redeemer, smaller than his Brazilian cousin but very well located to be seen from afar. We will pass by there before leaving the city.

The inseparable sign of volcanic regions. Tsunami alert.

We approach the huge statue by car.

The access ends on foot. Finally, it is not so impressive as that.

Now, we are not going to follow the direction indicated by Jesus but rather the opposite one to go up to the north of the country, 250 km from there, to the city of Esteli.

Masaya

Short stop halfway to Masaya, for lunch break, at the restaurant Asados Doña Minguita.
