The first foundations of the church date back to the 16th century when it must not have really looked like its current appearance because it was made of wood and straw, and the tower did not exist.

The church is dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe, an important religious and cultural symbol in Mexico. According to Catholic tradition, she appeared to an indigenous man named Juan Diego in 1531 near Mexico City.
